ABOUT US

THE LEATHERHEAD THEATRE

Welcome to the Leatherhead Theatre

The theatre is managed on behalf of a charitable trust set up by local people who are passionate about enabling and encouraging both personal and community transformation through the arts.

All hire fees go towards covering the annual costs of running and maintaining this Grade II listed venue. Leatherhead Theatre receives no funding from the local or county council, or from Arts Council England.

History

We are delighted to say that the Leatherhead Revival Trust has been granted a ten year extension to the theatre leases by the landlord. This means that the Leatherhead Theatre Company can continue to provide community focused inclusive entertainment and educational activities for another ten years. We are sure you will agree that this is good news and we would like to thank your for all your valuable help and support so far.

Background

The current Leatherhead Theatre, formerly known as the Thorndike Theatre, opened in September 1969. Many well-known stars performed on the stage until the venue was closed in 1997 following the withdrawal of public funding. In 1999 the building was awarded Grade II listed status for buildings of special architectural or historic interest.

In 2001 the theatre opened again after a 15 year lease was granted to a local Christian charity and social enterprise. In the 2005 Leatherhead Tomorrow Healthcheck, the theatre was cited as one of the town's best features. It helps to sustain community life by contributing an estimated £625,000 economic added value each year, and enabling many thousands of people to enjoy the events that take place at this unique venue.
